West Side Recreation and Park District Receives $100,000 to Boost Community Programs and Underwrite New Gymnasium

TAFT, CA - The West Side Recreation and Park District (WSRPD) is pleased to announce a $100,000 grant from the Aera Energy Fund of the Kern Community Foundation.  The funds will help underwrite construction costs for the gymnasium under construction at the district’s new recreational center and provide additional funding for the district’s S.T.O.P. Program, which provides scholarships to assist local families with fees associated with participation in WSRPD programs. The new gym will be called the Aera Energy Gymnasium.

“We are pleased to sponsor this grant in support of the West Side Recreation and Park District.  The district has a long-standing tradition of providing a wide range of services for all ages,” says Jeff Dittman, Aera Energy LLC vice president – operations. “With nearly 90% of the families in Taft and surrounding communities participating in its programs, the district is a very important community resource.”

“How do you put into words the gratitude West Side Recreation & Park District has for Aera Energy LLC and the Kern Community Foundation?  At a time when the economy is suffering and when monies are being withheld or taken away from special districts and schools, Aera Energy LLC and the Kern Community Foundation are going against the grain, contributing to the community on the west side. Aera Energy LLC and the Kern Community Foundation’s commitment to the people on the Westside and the community abroad continue to help change the communities for the better, and on behalf of Don Koenig West Side Recreation & Park District Administrator and the community we are very thrilled and thankful,” says Les Clark, Recreation Supervisor.

Aera Energy LLC and the Kern Community Foundation’s commitment to the people on the Westside and the community abroad continue to help change communities for the better and West Side Recreation & Park District is extremely grateful for this partnership. With the help of Aera Energy LLC and the Kern Community Foundation our on-going goals continue to thrive in the following ways:

·         Providing recreation experiences to individuals, families and communities

·         Fostering human development

·         Promoting health and wellness

·         Increasing cultural unity

·         Facilitating community problem solving

·         Strengthening safety and security

·         Strengthening community image and sense of place

·         Supporting the local economy

·         Working with and helping all organizations on the West Side

      ·         Developing partnerships for a solid
            future

The Westside was built because of the oil industry and continues to thrive because of the industry’s on-going support.

8-year old park-enthusiast and local resident, Presley Golling, shares his love of parks:

Games of tag and hide and seek

Birthday parties, hunting eggs

Football practice and soccer too

There are always lots of things to do.

Parks are the best place to run and play,

Fun with friends on a sunny day.

Lay on the grass and watch the clouds

as they form into different shapes.

See the elephant, there's a boat

now sit back and watch them float.

Without parks life would be sad

Taft has some great ones and I am glad.
